Griffin Fence has installed automatic gate installation systems throughout the Houston metro since 1979 — from simple residential swing gate installation operators to high-cycle commercial slide gate systems. We install and service all major operator brands: LiftMaster, FAAC, Ghost Controls, Viking, US Automatic, and Linear.
Get a Free Automatic Gate EstimateSliding gates move laterally rather than swinging open, making them ideal for driveways where there is insufficient clearance in front of the gate for a swing arc. Two main types exist: track-mounted slide gates (a V-groove wheel runs in a ground-embedded track) and cantilever gates (the gate slides on post-mounted rollers with no ground track). Cantilever gates are the preferred choice for most Houston properties because the absence of a ground track eliminates debris accumulation and avoids issues with Houston's clay soil heaving the track out of alignment. Cantilever gates require a run of fence equal to the gate width plus an additional 20–25% for the counterbalance section.
Commercial-grade V-groove slide gates for high-traffic driveways — up to 40 feet wide with automated operators.
Single and double swing gates for residential driveways — manual to fully automated with keypad and app control.
Ornamental iron, steel, and aluminum driveway gates — flat-top, spear-top, arched, or custom profiles.
Obstruction detection, vehicle loop detectors, and safety reversals on all automated gate operators.
Video intercom systems let you see visitors and grant access remotely via smartphone app.
Emergency gate repairs on all major operators — LiftMaster, DoorKing, Viking, Elite, FAAC parts stocked.
The simplest automatic gate configuration — a single gate leaf attached to one post, swinging open 90–180 degrees. Suitable for driveways up to about 14 feet wide and for properties where the gate swings into a flat area. The operator is a linear actuator or hydraulic arm mounted to the gate post and gate frame. Single swing gates are the most economical automatic gate option and well-suited to Houston's predominantly flat topography.
Two gate leaves meeting in the center, each swinging outward (or inward) with their own operator arm. Standard for driveways wider than 14 feet and the most common configuration for Houston residential estate driveways. Each leaf requires its own operator, and the two operators must be synchronized — proper programming is essential to ensure they open and close in sequence without collision.
Vertical pivot gates rotate around a pivot point — suitable for applications where a conventional swing or slide gate is impractical. Barrier arm gates (the style used at parking facilities) are a commercial product that Griffin Fence installs for commercial properties, parking lots, HOA community entrances, and managed access facilities.
Griffin Fence installs and services all major automatic gate operator brands. We do not endorse one brand over another — the right choice depends on your gate weight, duty cycle, power source, and access control requirements. Brands we work with regularly include:
We do not claim to be a certified dealer for any specific brand — we install and service all major brands and select the right operator for your specific application.
Running electrical conduit from your main panel to the gate operator is the most reliable long-term power solution. Hardwired operators have consistent power regardless of sun availability and can support higher-duty-cycle applications. The trade-off: electrical conduit must be run to the gate location, which involves trenching across the driveway or yard. In most Houston jurisdictions, this requires an electrical permit.
Solar is an excellent choice for Houston properties — particularly acreage and rural properties in Waller County, Liberty County, and outer Fort Bend County where running conduit long distances would be costly. Houston receives abundant sun year-round (averaging over 200 sunny days annually), making solar-charged battery systems reliably productive. Solar systems typically include one or two solar panels and a 12V deep-cycle battery. The battery powers the operator; the solar panel keeps the battery charged.
Even for hardwired operators, a battery backup system is strongly recommended in Houston, TX. The Houston metro experiences more power outages per year than most major US cities — Hurricane Beryl alone left nearly one million customers without power for days in July 2024. Without battery backup, a power outage renders your automatic gate inoperable. A gate stuck closed traps vehicles; a gate stuck open eliminates your security barrier. Battery backup keeps the gate operational through outages, typically for 50–100 cycles depending on battery capacity.
The gate operator is only part of an access control system. Griffin Fence integrates all standard access control components:
The fundamental difference is duty cycle — how many times the gate opens and closes per day. A residential driveway gate typically cycles 10–20 times daily. A commercial property entry gate may cycle 100 times or more. Residential-rated operators are not designed for commercial duty cycles; using one in a high-traffic commercial application will result in premature failure. Griffin Fence sizes the operator to the actual expected duty cycle of your application, not the minimum specification.
Griffin Fence follows a systematic installation process to ensure automatic gates operate safely and reliably for years in Houston's demanding climate:
Automatic gates are powerful machinery. UL 325 — the Underwriters Laboratories safety standard for automatic gate operators — mandates specific safety features. Griffin Fence installs all required features on every automatic gate project:
Houston averages more than 10 significant power outages per year, with major storm events causing extended outages. Hurricane Beryl (2024) left parts of Houston without power for over two weeks. An automatic gate without battery backup becomes a fixed barrier during these events. Griffin Fence strongly recommends battery backup on every hardwired automatic gate installation in the Houston area. For properties that experienced Harvey or Beryl flooding, waterproof operator housings and elevated mounting positions are also discussed.
Houston's summer ambient temperatures regularly exceed 95°F, and the temperature inside a dark-colored operator housing in direct sun can exceed 140°F. Excessive heat degrades lubricants, accelerates seal wear, and stresses electronic components. Griffin Fence installs operators in shaded enclosures where possible, uses high-temperature-rated lubricants, and selects models with thermal protection circuits for Houston installations.
A heavy wrought iron dual-swing gate with two operators exerts significant moment force on its hinge post. In Houston's expansive clay, an undersized concrete footing will allow that post to rock slightly over years of cycling, eventually working the concrete loose and allowing post movement. Griffin Fence engineers post footing size based on gate weight, gate width, and the expected soil conditions at the installation address.
Most Houston-area incorporated cities require a building permit for automatic gate installation and a separate electrical permit for the wiring. City of Houston, TX, Pearland, Sugar Land, Katy (City of Katy), League City, Bellaire, West University, all six Memorial Villages, and Conroe all have permit requirements. Unincorporated Harris County generally does not require a building permit for residential gates under 8 feet, but the electrical work typically requires an electrical permit regardless of jurisdiction.
